The power of dreams.

When I was six years old, I played the bass drum in a Salvation Army band in Oslo. Back then I was impressively underconfident, and didn't think I could accomplish anything much. I can remember sitting there playing the drum and thinking something along the lines of; 'this isn't hard, I can do this.' From that day on I wanted to play the drums for the rest of my life. That was about 27 years ago. From that day on I would get restless everytime someone played the drums live on a drumset, I would feel so alive when I heard a marching band and I would rewind a part in a song just to hear a good drum solo. More recently, well, for the last 22 years or so, my biggest dream was to play the drums in a band and sing at the same time. (See blog entry: http://mockthepoodle.blogspot.com/2009/08/stuff-i-love-part-deux.html)

My dream finally came true in April. I cannot say how happy I am to play for BassetBand, http://bassetband.com/?page_id=21. The practice goes by so quickly - It's such a good laugh. I am thrilled to have realised a dream I've had for so long, I don't take it for granted.

All of this got me thinking about dreams coming true and what we need to do to achieve these dreams. Obviously, the greater and bigger the dream, the harder you'll have to work for it. Can I just say this first; I never thought this would happen and yet it did!!! I looked for a band first, I prayed about it, I practised, I set goals and I dreamt about what kind of band I'd like to be in. I never gave up and I had some brilliant support from all of my mates - which is no small thing.

I would recommend writing your dreams down and then thinking about how you plan on acheiving your goals to make the dreams happen. Take yourself seriously. Don't say that you're too old or too busy, that's not hopeful or helpful. Tell someone your dreams and ask around. Make a list and prioritise which dreams you want to acheive first. Mostly though, NEVER give up, don't share your dreams with people who wont support you or take you seriously, ask around and then give it 100%. It WILL happen.
