Let's have a chat,man to man.

There are many things I really love about Canada, and there's one thing they do over here that I'd like to talk to you about. They'rereally accepting and open-minded. You might get offended by this old friend, but try not, because I'm not trying to insult you personally, it's more of a generality with a nation that I'm struggling with. Mostly this one:
Do you know what? I'm just going to say it how it is. Some of you are really narrow- minded and tradition based. After all these years of knowing me personally, I still get teased quite harshly about my faith and my thoughts. That's so crap.
I've heard so many of you say things like:
'Man må respektere alle religioner/one should respect all religions.' But what you really mean is: every religion except; Islam, Judaism and certainly not Christianity. If you're sensing any anger in my voice today, you'd be dead right.
When we first came to Canada, and they asked us what we were doing here, we avoided saying we were at a Christian school because of all the comments we'd received from our mates in England and Norway, mostly. Eventually though, we started to answer that we were studying Christian stuff at a Christian school, and to our complete surprise, people were absolutely fine with it - happy even. Now, don't do that automatic cynical thing you do now, were you mutter under your breath: 'Oh right, I bet they were just B.S.ing you and being false,' we thought that too, but when we started to get to know these people, we realised that they were just more open minded and encouraging than most of people we've been with. I'm not talking about my close mates here. I'm talking about people that I bump into on a fairly regular basis that are just so incredibly, cynical, narrow-minded, and bitter about what I believe in.
Before I came to this school and was telling my employers and people I hung around with were I was headed, I received mixed reactions. Most of my mates were intrigued, but pleased for me. Some people thought it was strange, but didn't make life hard for me, but some people laughed openly in my face, or snarled at me when I mentioned it. My boss laughed and teased me about it in a really cold way and others would make comments whenever it was mentioned. That's incredibly hurtful and crap - I really don't like that. I feel like I’m throwing pearls for swine when I tell people about things that mean a lot to me. It’s so stupid and unnecessary. I know I can be narrow-minded too, but not in such a cruel way, I hope, and not so persistently.
I’ve been so impressed by the people here. They’re real, friendly, open minded and encouraging – it’s been really healing to be here. Even people from other religions were interested and responded courteously about what we were doing here. They were generally interested to meet us – that’s love and acceptance.
I feel it is incredibly hypocritical of Norway in particular, when people insist on bringing their children up to be ‘tolerant’ of all religions and cultures, yet are so incredibly anti; Israel, Christians, Muslims, Jews, evangelism, titles and discipline. Mostly yous scream and preach about nothing, because some of yous haven’t even bothered to check the facts first. What rubbish!! Your children will, and do, see right through your words straight into your actions. Everyone in the universe knows that actions speak louder than words.
There are hardly ever calm discussions that involve one person gently sharing their opinion with another person and vice versa in Norway. Instead people interrupt and drown people out, to such an extent as to rip your own personal opinions to shreds. I wish it was different-I really do. There, I said it.
Why is it this way? I reckon it’s because we haven’t mixed a lot with other nations yet. We’re not used to discussing things in a civilised way, and we’re not very accepting or encouraging of other people –yet. You can’t change a whole nation, but you can whinge about it and feel hurt by people’s actions for a while – and you can move away to experience more accepting people. You can never give up, and you can educate in a non-patronising way.
Soooo, are you allright? Are you annoyed or insulted? Have I made you think……a bit? Are we still mates? Only time will tell.

Preach it, sister! ;-)
I`ve never seen it like this, as a "nation-thing", but it makes a lot of sense. And it may also be a part of why I dread and often avoid telling people I work with or that I`ll be doing a Christian photo-school!! Instead I "leave out" the Christian part, and a some parts of me than feels really "guilty", as in "Are you ashamed of God?"... Which I don`t want to be, and I hope I`m not. But yeah, its almost like it`s "tolerance" to the point of arrogance for anything else than what you yourself think to be "the right thing". Thanks for sharing, and for being so "from-the-gut"! ;)
That settles it. You must move to a new country. I vote Texas!
Katrine, I gotta say: thumbs up for this bllog entry!! As I read the "nice reactions" you got from people when you told them what you´re gonna do I was reminded of the things I got to hear: it was pretty much the same. Laughter, ironic words and all that stuff...What can I say..seems like it´s not only norway and england, germany is big in that as well!! But you did something awesome, writing it down, saying you wish it was different. And right, we, can´t change a whole nation, but we can start to be the change we wish to see...!!
As I read this, it really touched a nerve in me, having lived here in this country all of my life.
I think you're absolutely right about that. At least most of what you write.
Why can't I read a newspaper article on the internet and not see people virtually being at each other's throats just three or four lines down the comments field.
Almost whatever that article was about, it's disgusting.
I too favour the notion of critical thinking but what happened to ordinary polite behaviour?
Being a Christian I'm so used to being laughed at over my views, I make sure I'm having a good day with my stomach before engaging in any discussions at work or elsewhere that could spark some controversy, so that goes for normal to me. I'm used to it but sometimes voice my opinion anyway.
Don't you worry about the pearl for swine thing, as long as it does'nt break you down speaking to them. If your arguments can stand the test of daylight they are sure worth being heard.
As for what happened to our nation, I can't tell for the general rudeness of man, but for the state of the church I assume this:
We're in this disastrous state because the last couple of decades has been a disaster for us as christians. Sunday school appearance has dropped to near zero over that time.
There's been no leadership that really stood out within the church, to confront society.
There's been a decay over the recent years in the general environment for voluntary work.
We're not as willing to participate in volunteer activities anymore.
A drop in the volunteer participations has left the church as a box with no content in it.
The church has become invisible as part of society, they don't make any real influx in everymans world. Yet they try at times to impose sanctions on society, like in abortion issues, in hindering gays rights and other conflict areas, mainly of moral characteristics. That stirs controversy. That's what society sees, and in other areas we're invisible totally, singing hymns together as we are on sundays, as our only commitment, deep inside our safe buildings.
We should really have been more involved in all sorts of activities that connected more directly with the local community around us.
Being a positive influence that could visualize more of our calling as christians to society.
Thats where you have it I think.
So go ahead and see right through those ironic grins and tell them with the fullest of your confidence: I am going to a Christian school!
2. Tim 3: 12-15 says: "In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." - If we want to live godly in Jesus, we WILL be persecuted! So be glad when people loock down at you - you are being persecuted by this world. The world rejected JESUS - it will also reject us who live close to HIM. Rejoice always!!! 1.Peter 4:12-16 says: "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name." SO: Praise God! You are blessed - for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you!!! YEAH!!!! Thank you Jesus!
Wow! Struth, what a response. I was dead scared of writing this, but am encouraged by what you have written back.Tank you good people.
Malin: Your comment spoke to me the most, probably because we think in a similar way.
Lizzy: We also think in a similar way.I'm sorry it's hard in Germany too.
Nils Gudmund: Hija mate.Blimey O'Reily, your English is brilliant. WOW!! You make some really good points. Thank you for sharing so openly. Good stuff.
AK:Gleder meg til å sjå deg snart.
JENN:You are my gem and my angel -never change.
I love that you love us...me! It is so affirming to hear someone speak about what i similarly experienced in Norway. I still wish there would be more open-mindedness instead of criticism and using the guillotine to shoot down people who are different and just being themselves.
How much longer are you here? When will you be heading back?
Cynthia
Cynthia!!
